Complication Editor

Complications for your watch and widgets for your iPhone are built in Home Assistant, in the Wrist Assistant panel. The iPhone app has no complication editor since Wrist Assistant 3.0.

  1. Update the Wrist Assistant integration to 3.0 or later in HACS, then restart Home Assistant.
  2. Open Home Assistant in a browser.
  3. Click Wrist Assistant near the bottom of the sidebar.

Only a Home Assistant administrator sees the panel. If it is missing, sign in with an administrator account.

Complications are free on every tier. The old limit of one complication in free mode is gone.

The editor is three columns under one top bar.

  • Top bar. Browse opens every complication in this home. New, Import, Share, a sync pill that says whether every device has your last save, a ··· menu (Resend to the watch, Refresh now), Save, and ? for help.
  • Left column. The Pages card and the Layers card.
  • Canvas. The face, drawn the way the watch draws it, with one floating toolbar.
  • Right column. The settings of whatever is selected: a layer, a group, or the whole complication.

One complication is one shape (Circular, Rectangular, Corner, Inline, or an iPhone widget size) on one kind of device. To have the same design in another shape, use Duplicate.

A design can sit on several devices at once. Browse shows it as one card, with a Devices menu on the card to hide or delete it per device. The foot of Browse has Back up all, which saves every complication in this home to one file, and Import.

Every complication is a stack of layers. The Layers card lists them, top is in front.

  • + Add opens the Add sheet. Its All tab shows every element (Show a value, Pictures, Decorate, with the invisible tap zone), every preset, and your saved parts. Search at the top. Press / anywhere to open it.
  • Click a row to edit that layer. Rest the pointer on a row to see where that layer sits on the face.
  • Drag a row to reorder. Drop it on a group to put it inside.
  • Cmd-click or Shift-click rows to pick several, then Group them or Save to parts.
  • The Background row at the bottom is the shape’s own fill and border.
  • Shared values at the foot of the column are values many layers read, such as one entity used by three layers.

A complication can have up to four pages, shown one at a time. The Pages card shows one tile per page with its layer count. Click a tile to show that page on the canvas and in Layers. Each tile has its own trash can.

Under the tiles are four buttons that add a ready-made tap zone to the page you are on: Previous page, Next page, One page, and Play all pages. Each one selects the new layer and lights its settings on the right, where you pick the page or the hold times. Any layer can turn pages too: set its Tap to a page action. The ? beside the title explains pages.

The row above the face holds the complication’s name (click it to rename), the devices it is on, and its shape. Undo, redo, Duplicate, and Delete sit at its right.

  • Device chips. One per watch or iPhone. The × on a chip takes the design off that device. The last copy goes to Unassigned, so the design is kept. Add to a device puts a linked copy on another device. Saving saves everywhere it is.
  • Duplicate (the copy icon) makes the design again as another shape or on another device.
  • Delete (the trash can) asks first. The dialog says where the design is and that the delete cannot be undone. On several devices, choose this device or all of them.

The floating toolbar over the face:

  • Taps shows every tap zone, labelled. With a layer selected, only its tap shows and its corners drag.
  • Demo shows the face alone, the way the watch draws it. Taps really run.
  • Preview as is one menu for the case size (40 mm to 49 mm, or an iPhone) and the color: full color, or the single tint many watch faces use.
  • Snap holds snap to grid with its size, grid lines, and snap to layers.
  • −, Fit, +, and full screen set the zoom.

The LIVE bar at the foot of the face lists the entities the design reads. Click one to try another value and see the design react. Back to live puts the real values back.

The right column shows cards for the selection. Every card starts open. Collapse all folds them to Content and Look, and a folded card says its settings in one line. Rarely used Look rows sit behind More.

With nothing selected, the Complication card has the name, the shape, the tap action for the whole face, Auto refresh, and the Flash shown after a tap.

History, at the foot of the column beside the revision, lists the last saves of this complication. Restore any of them. A restore is saved as a new revision, so you can go back again.

Note in the Add sheet writes a private note on the design, for yourself or anyone you share it with. Notes take simple Markdown: headings, bold, italic, lists, and links. The panel is the only place a note shows. The watch and iPhone never draw it.

Saving in the panel reaches a device while its Wrist Assistant app is open on the same home. The watch pulls while its app is open, so open the watch app after a change. The sync pill in the top bar says Synced once every device has your last save, or names the devices still waiting, for example “2 changes waiting · open the watch app to sync”.

To put a new complication on a face, long-press the face, tap Edit, and pick it by name under Wrist Assistant Circular, Rectangular, Corner, or Inline. New names can take a minute or two to show in the picker.

Share exports the complication as text, a file, or a link. Import in the top bar reads one back in and asks which of your entities each slot should use.

From Share, Post to online gallery sends a design to the complication gallery, where other people can find it. A design waits for review before it shows. If you change a design after posting it, the button reads Update share, and sending it posts a new version. The link and votes stay, and the old version stays up until the new one is approved. The gallery shows the description you write when you post, never your notes.

In the gallery, Add to my Home Assistant imports a design into your panel.
